Poetry Lecture
In order to inherit the excellent classical poetry culture of China, enrich students' cultural background, cultivate the patriotic spirit of young people, and create a campus culture atmosphere filled with rich books and poetic charm, on June 17th, our school specially invited Wang Youyuan, President of Anqing Poetry Society, to come to the school to give a special lecture on poetry titled "Remembering the Aspiration to Soar High in Youth, Having the Will to Be the Best in the World". All poetry enthusiasts in the school and all sixth-grade teachers and students gathered together to attend this poetic rendezvous, to appreciate the spirit of poetry and set the aspirations of young people.
To start with, at the beginning of the lecture, President Wang Youyuan took as his starting point the theme's famous line: "In youth, one should aspire to reach the clouds and promise to be among the finest in the world." Drawing on classical and modern poetic masterpieces as well as Anqing’s local literary heritage, he delivered a layered and insightful presentation. The talk covered multiple dimensions—poetic appreciation, cultural lineage, personal cultivation, and education—explaining both the value and methods of studying poetry. Also, he interpreted the youthful spirit and regional culture embedded in timeless classics, guiding students to understand that appreciating poetry is not merely about aesthetic elegance, but also about cultivating character, setting aspirations, and gaining the inner strength to persevere. What's more, grounded in Anqing’s rich poetic tradition, President Wang connected the essence of Wanjiang culture with essential poems taught in primary and secondary schools, elucidating their meanings and emotional cores in clear, engaging, and humorous language. Breaking the stereotype that classical poetry was obscure and difficult, he immersed students in the beauty of Chinese verse—its linguistic grace, evocative imagery, and noble spirit.
Furthermore, in order to stimulate students' enthusiasm for participation and enrich the learning format of poetry, two interactive segments - a poetry knowledge quiz and a "Flower Verse" duel - were specially designed for this lecture, bringing the entire event to a climax.
Moreover, the poetry question-and-answer session closely related to the classic ancient poems studied in class and the local culture of Anqing. The questions were of moderate difficulty. Thus, the students raised their hands enthusiastically and answered calmly, quickly providing the sources of the poems, the authors, and key lines. The solid accumulation of poetry knowledge fully demonstrated the excellent literary literacy of our school students.
Additionally, the most anticipated "Flower" round of the competition was filled with a lively atmosphere. This time, the theme of the "Flower" was chosen from the classic word. The students, together with President Wang, took turns reciting ancient poems, who exchanged verses fluently, with each word resonating loudly and the poetry flowing beautifully. There was continuous applause at the competition site. Meanwhile, the students were well-informed and knowledgeable, fully demonstrating their youthful literary talent. In the fun game, they consolidated their knowledge of poetry and experienced the unique romance and charm of classical poetry. Moreover, President Wang Youyuan provided on-site comments and guidance, affirming and encouraging the students who answered well, empowering them to delve deeper into poetry and enjoy learning traditional culture. Also, President Wang presented bookmarks and books as souvenirs to the students who performed exceptionally well.
Last but not the least, at the end of the lecture, President Wang Youyuan addressed all the students, saying: "Young people have lofty aspirations. Let's seize the spring and rainy seasons to embark on a poetic life. It's hoped that all of you will read more classics, delve deeper into poetry, and cultivate your character in the ink and ancient charm, and firmly hold your ideals in the timeless virtues. Remember your youthful mission, always maintain the original aspiration to strive forward, and do not waste your youth or the times. Truly achieve a mind full of artistic conception and eyes filled with mountains and rivers, and grow into a new generation of teenagers with cultural heritage, ideals and aspirations, and a sense of patriotism."
In conclusion, a continuous flow of poetic charm enriches the campus, with a single inch of dedication pointing towards the distant horizon. This special poetry lecture integrates knowledge, entertainment, and educational value, which not only enriches the campus cultural life but also broadens students' horizons of traditional culture. In the future, our school will continue to deeply develop the construction of a book-filled campus, regularly conducting activities such as poetry recitation, cultural exploration, and visits by famous scholars to the campus. More remarkably, through poetry and culture, we aim to educate students and cultivate talents, thus allowing Chinese traditional culture to permeate every corner of the campus and helping students grow poetically and embark on their dreams.
